Preserve Old Things - Friday January 08, 2016
Thus says the Lord, "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" Jeremiah 6:16
I have come to a conviction on POT. I believe it is good and important. Preserving Old Things is something God tells us to do! He tells Jeremiah to instruct the people to "ask for the ancient paths." Before Jeremiah's time there was a whole foundation of truth God had imparted to His people in the history, the poetry and wisdom books, and the prophecies in His Word. To find and believe and honor that revelation about God would result in soul-rest. But the apostate Jews weren't having it.

I've spent some time the last few years preserving old things. While my mother was living with us, I sent out her Christmas cards for her, preserving the rich friendships of her long life. I've returned many of her photos to family members to keep precious memories alive. Her earliest photo album has a safe place in my bedroom. Her dishes and silver have found a home in our cupboards. So have dishes and hand-painted china from John's mother, Hazel. I labored over refurbishing a stuffed gingham bear my mother-in-law made. Last summer for a granddaughter I created a doll bed out of a small box – like Hazel did – to go with a tiny pillow and quilt she had sewn decades ago.

New things are great as birthday and wedding gifts, but we do not need new truth! The Greeks in Athens were always looking for "something new" (Acts 17:21). Sound like our culture? God tells us to search out the old truths and continue to live by them. So I believe in POT.
