Time in a Bottle - Sunday January 25, 2015
Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 NIV
Jim Croce wrote a popular song in the seventies that began, "If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I'd like to do. . . ." I am sure we could all fill in the blank of what we would do with a few extra minutes that we could pour out when we needed it. But the reality is that we have enough time. God is not an unfair God. He would not give us twenty-six hours of things He wanted to accomplish in a twenty-four hour time span. Each day is a gift of time from God that we should appreciate and not complain about. Imagine if you bought a gift for a friend and they said that the candy was nice but they wish you would have bought them a bigger box. We do the same thing with God every time we lament that we don't have enough time.

So if God's gift of time is sufficient, what is the key to not feeling behind and rushed? Maybe we should ask the Creator of time how to best spend it. The Message version of the above verse says, "Oh teach us to live well! Teach us to live wisely and well!" That plea of desperation has become my prayer. I can wake up in the morning feeling overwhelmed by all the things I want to fit in, but God doesn't intend for all of them to get done by me in the same day. He promises in Psalm 32:8: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go." As you begin this new day, ask God how to best spend each moment of it. There is more I wanted to say on this topic but . . . I ran out of time, so we will continue tomorrow.
