'As it Happened' - 2 - Monday January 25, 2016
So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by her daughter-in-law Ruth, the young Moabite woman. They arrived in Bethlehem in late spring at the beginning of the barley harvest. So Ruth went out to gather grain behind the harvesters. And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, the relative of her father-in-law... Ruth 1:22, 2:3 NLT
Ruth's life is filled with the providence of God. The word providence can mean divine guidance or care. Naomi and Ruth were in the very center of God's will. They were under God's umbrella of protection in their lives. Ruth and Naomi's return to Bethlehem was certainly part of God's plan.

Ruth selected "at random" the field in which she would glean. As today's verse puts it, "as it happened" she found herself in that field. God works through our ordinary choices to provide for those who trust Him. Studies show an average adult will make over 2,000 choices a day. Should I pick this can up now? Yes. Should I open it? Yes. Should I drink? Yes. Should I have two drinks? And so on. 2,000 choices a day.

Was it by chance that Ruth happened to walk into Boaz's field? I would say yes and no. We make choices all day. You are making choices in your life right now. I believe God is sovereign in all of life, and God is going to guide us many times from behind the scenes. That is one of the most wonderful truths of God's will in my life. Sometimes He's guiding me from the backside, from the shadows.

Is He with you? He's guiding you. He may be in the background; sometimes His voice may be somewhat silent. Here's the truth I want you to hang on to: God is with you.
