When I Grow Up - Sunday February 01, 2015
Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7
Our kitchen faucet wasn't working very well. So I ran to the hardware store to buy a replacement. When I returned home, my kids were busy playing where I had left them. I started removing the old faucet. Suddenly, my five-year- old son Elias stopped playing, walked over, and started watching me. I said, "What's up, bud?" He said, "I am watching you so I can learn how to do this when I grow up." For over an hour, he faithfully watched me remove the old faucet and assemble and install the new faucet.

I was reminded of the verse above. Think of the spiritual leaders in your life: imitate their faith.

More and more, our culture doesn't value God's ways; most of the time it mocks them. Our culture tells us there is no such thing as sexual immorality, there are no roles in marriage, and as parents we shouldn't instruct and train our children. Think about the things our culture says matter the most: money, career success, vacations, pleasure, and partying. Instead of the gospel and building God's kingdom, they value these other things.

Jesus said that wisdom is proved right by her children. And it takes a long time for kids to grow up. Our decisions to live for God's kingdom, or share the gospel, or raise our children in a godly way, sometimes take a long time to demonstrate their effectiveness. So Hebrews 13:7 is a good reminder. Remember your leaders, consider how their marriage, parenting, and life priorities have worked out. And imitate them!
