Superbowl Cheers - Sunday February 03, 2013
For His lovingkindness is great toward us, and the truth of the Lord is everlasting. Praise the Lord! Psalm 117:2
"Praise the Lord!" In the Psalms, David's praise flows because of truths he sees about God. He praises God for His greatness and everlasting truth, for being the ruler of all the earth, for being good, powerful, faithful, and more.

It's like football. Watching skillful players inspires awe. I'm a big fan of the game, so during the Superbowl I'm in front of the TV, wanting everyone else to stop talking so I can watch the gridiron ballet! When I see a ball sail sixty yards into the hands of a player leaping backward over two defenders, I can't help but cheer. My praise comes from seeing awesome plays!

Imagine being at the Superbowl with your stadium seat turned backward. Just imagine cheerleaders at the back of the stands rebuking, "You need to cheer the team more! You haven't been praising them enough! Baseball fans can cheer louder than you!" Yet if you couldn't view the awesome plays, your cheers would only be motivated by "Am I cheering loud enough yet?" rather than by sincere shout-outs for amazing third-down conversions. Praise automatically flows when you see amazing feats.

Notice that David never says with inward focus, "O praise the Lord for I haven't been praising Him enough," like we say. He simply reflects on God's characteristics and praises the Lord because of seeing awesome truths. So if you ever feel rebuked for not praising God, don't look at your own lack of praise. Contemplate God's majesty, power, and love; then praise will flow. Turn in your seat, view God's ballet of wonders, and give a shout-out to Him!
