The Heart of Worship - Friday February 12, 2016

I have found that worship songs are such a great way to connect with God. They touch our emotions and give us a fresh glimpse of how amazing our Creator is. But I also want to make sure that the truths I hold onto about God's character are more than just lyrics in a song. Lately I have begun an exercise of taking a favorite worship song, highlighting some lines that impact me, and then finding a Bible verse that reinforces that truth. Here is an example from the song If I Have You by Vertical Church Band:

"I don't need to see tomorrow's plans; I just need to trust that you are working...” Here's the corresponding verse: "I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for" (Jeremiah 29:11 MSG).

"I don't need the riches of this world; I can't even take them where I'm going… " The verse: "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want" (Philippians 4:12 NIV).

"I don't need a thousand empty words; I just need the ones that You have spoken… " Compare this verse: "You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word" (Psalm 119:114 NIV).

I encourage you to find a worship song in your quiet time today and support its lyrics through Scripture. Songwriter Matt Redman wrote, "I'll bring You more than a song." Let that be our goal in worship.
