Face in the Dirt? - Monday March 09, 2015
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of His people. Psalm 113:7-8
Our son Peter has moved out, but he moved in a science experiment for me to tend. The white beans needed a warm sprouting place like our solarium. I said, "But, Peter, this is like an elementary school science project!" "That's the point, Mom-I'm studying to be an elementary school teacher." "Oh." So I watered his beans (planted at different depths) and sent him texts and photos on their progress.

Here's a strange result: in one cup where two beans were planted just below the surface, both beans started growing by opening their leaf into the soil with their roots in the air! The tiny threads were drying up when I noticed the problem. I was shocked. Don't all beans know to put their roots into the good black soil and their heads toward the light? The other beans were doing that!

Sometimes things go so wrong in our lives. Wrong thoughts turn into bad choices that turn into a miserable lifestyle. The destruction to ourselves and to others can be devastating. We can end up with our dreams dashed, our hopes snuffed out, and our faces in the dust. Figuratively or literally, we lie there, helpless. There seems no way out.

Outside help is essential. Our Savior comes to those lying in the dust, His chosen ones, and breathes new life into them. He lifts and re-roots them in His love and His Word. Praise Him for coming to our rescue!

In the case of the helpless bean sprouts, I intervened. I carefully lifted and replanted them with their shriveled roots in watered soil. They revived and are growing strong!
