Rachel's Prince Charming - Monday March 16, 2015
So Jacob served seven years for Rachel and they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her. Genesis 29:20
The "Prince Charming" myth deceives us into thinking, "If only I had a Prince Charming (or Princess Wonderful) to love me, then I would be totally happy the rest of my life."

But think about Rachel's life with her Prince Charming. When Jacob met Rachel, it was practically love at first sight. Jacob worked seven years for the right to marry Rachel, but to him it was merely like days because of the stars in his eyes. Even when his father-in-law deceived him on his wedding night, Jacob willingly gave seven more years for the girl of his dreams. Rachel remained his special girl for life. What a prince! What more could a girl want?

Yet even the best of romantic love isn't enough to give a woman a completely happy life. Distraught over her rival sister having all the babies, Rachel commanded her Prince Charming to rescue her- which was of course impossible. He couldn't magically create a baby in her womb! More-over, Jacob's love didn't keep Rachel from craving idols. During their great escape from Laban, Rachel made off with the household gods and then deceived her own father about it. In the end she died an early death during childbirth. Happily ever after? Not!

Jacob loved Rachel dearly, but Jacob's love couldn't secure her happiness. Let's face our myth head on and deny its message. A human cannot secure happiness for you. Jesus is our Prince Charming, and He promises an eternal "happily ever after." While you are still in this romantically broken world, gaze at the Prince who loves you deeply.
