A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief...Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried. Isaiah 53:3-4
"How is this possible?" I thought as I drove toward my dorm on a dark November night. I had just discovered that my closest friend didn't really want a close friendship anymore. I'd recently transferred colleges to be near this friend, but now I was alone and sad at a new school. As tears flowed, words of a song swirled into my mind: "I felt every teardrop when in darkness you cried, and I strove to remind you that for those tears I died."

"Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried" (Isaiah 53:4). Easter is a time when we usually think of Jesus as bearing our sins, but what does it mean that Jesus carried our pain?

In a loving plan, God took our first parents out of the Garden of Eden. This meant that all their children, including us, would be born into an imperfect world. To be sure, our grief is often a result of our own personal sin, but we also face grief and pain from things that seem to be no fault of our own: injustices, diseases, and disasters. When Jesus came, He entered our world of pain. When He died for the entire fallen state of humanity, He bore the sorrows of the world, past, present and future.

If injustice is done to us, Jesus says it is being done to Him (Matthew 25:41-45). Jesus feels our pain (John 11:35), He stores our tears in His bottle (Psalm 56:8), and in heaven He will wipe away all tears (Revelation 7:17). When Jesus came to earth and died for you, He not only understood your pain-He carried your pain. Every grief you face is shared by your loving Savior. Cry your tears with Him!
