You Break It ... Jesus Buys It? - Wednesday April 15, 2015
"Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." John 8:10-11 NKJV
On a recent trip to Maine with my lovely wife to celebrate our 25th anniversary, I saw a sign in a quaint, little store that said, "Pretty to look at, fun to hold. If you break it, we mark it 'SOLD'!" I smiled, but stayed an arm's length away from the pricey items!

When our kids were younger, we would keep a pretty tight rein on them whenever we walked through stores with expensive or breakable items. We were fully aware that the penalty for our kiddo shattering something was going to fall on us. Fortunately, I don't recall our toddlers breaking anything valuable-stealing, yes, breaking, no.

In John 8, the woman caught in adultery probably didn't fully comprehend what Jesus meant when He told her, "Neither do I condemn you." He was actually going to take the blame for the sinful, adulterous actions she had committed minutes before. He didn't just say, "Oh, adultery is no big deal. It's okay." No, her sin would be paid for in full, by Him, on the cross of Calvary.

Like a parent paying for the sins of the child, Jesus looked at this woman and said, "I will take your punishment so you can go free." You see, salvation is free to us, but it cost Jesus everything He had: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8 NIV).

Christian, as you walk through life and make the mistake of breaking God's laws, remember Jesus paid for it already ... with His life.
