Story in the Blood - Friday April 18, 2014
You were redeemed...with the precious blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV
After recently visiting the doctor, I had the "wonderful opportunity" to have blood drawn for lab tests. I typically try not to study the technician's work too closely as my arm is poked and the blood is extracted. This time, however, I noticed that she was filling not one, but four red vials before completing her job. Now blood is blood to me; it holds no special meaning when I look at it. But to a trained person, samples of blood have a story to tell...indicating such things as blood sugar levels or the presence of cancer. Some expert was going to analyze my sample and deduce from that whether my liver function was healthy so that my doctor could write a prescription. Amazing!

Reflecting on blood, I am, of course, reminded of Jesus. Humbly taking the form of human flesh, Jesus acquired with it a precious cargo of blood. And His blood would indeed yield an amazing story.

After three years of ministry-healing, teaching people of the kingdom, and confronting the religious leaders of the day-Jesus was arrested, tried, and condemned to crucifixion. Severely flogged and beaten, Jesus spilled blood long before He was nailed to the cross. The nailed hands and feet and spear to the side just completed His draw of blood. What story does that blood reveal? It tells of courage that kept Jesus on His course of salvation for many, humility that led the Prince of Peace to submit to torture and death, and love that drove Him to pray for His enemies at the cross and to forgive the train of sinners throughout history. What a grand story indeed to be told!
