Unlikely, But True! - Tuesday April 19, 2011
What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands... 1 John 1:1
It was totally improbable. In 1973 my friend Steve Miller dialed a seven-digit local number in Kalamazoo, Michigan, expecting a time and temperature recording. But the live voice that answered the call was his friend Bill Woods in Ypsilanti! When Steve and Bill realized their good fortune, they quickly pulled housemates into the conversation-Neal Graber with Steve, and Paul Abbott on Bill's side. Amazed, they gave updates, encouraged each other, and thanked the Lord for the miracle connection!Because both Steve and Bill had recently moved from Kansas into housing for summer mission projects, their phones were not yet listed in directory assistance. In 1973 there were no cell phones or email-no possible way that Steve could have contacted Bill. Steve did not dial a "1" for long distance. He did not dial an area code. The phone company simply crossed the wires and "randomly" connected Steve to a "wrong number." But the wrong number was someone he actually knew-a friend! It seems so unlikely that a random local call could connect to a friend long distance. Yet these men testify that it happened-four of them-leaders in their churches. They are trustworthy men, so I believe them. Their unlikely story is true.Just because something is unlikely does not make it false. For example, Easter, the resurrection story, Jesus Christ risen from the dead-so unlikely. Yet a group of men went to their deaths saying, "What we have seen and heard, we proclaim to you also." Christ is risen!
