A Pinch of This, a Pinch of That - Monday May 25, 2015
Jesus also used this illustration: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough." Matthew 13:33 NLT
At our dinner table, we love to have a loaf of freshly baked bread. Recently I was putting the ingredients together and thinking about how three small things make the difference between a good loaf and a bad one: yeast, sugar, and salt.

Two little teaspoons of yeast are all that is needed to make the loaf rise and double in size. Similarly, our faithfulness in little choices that no one sees can have great impact. So much of our daily lives can seem to be insignificant events: picking up trash in a parking lot, praying for opportunities to share Jesus, consistently teaching and disciplining our children, having a good attitude at work. We may not see the immediate results, but in time these small acts can change a life.

How can my life have an impact? In bread dough a bit of sugar produces a slightly sweet taste. Our lives can also add a little sweetness to someone's day. I am amazed how much a small act of kindness means to someone.

Most dough recipes also call for a pinch of salt. The bible exhorts us in Matthew 5:13 to be the "salt of the earth." Salt makes food more interesting and flavorful. We can be salt by making Christ attractive by the way we live.

Yeast, sugar, salt. Three little teaspoons that seem like such a small part of a recipe. But without them our bread would be flat and tasteless. Let's commit to adding all three to our daily lives.
