Radical Ear-ectomy - Friday May 30, 2014
And when those who were around him [the disciples] saw what would follow, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him. Luke 22:49-51
Jesus as the Source, the Sustainer, and the Sovereign helps us with sharing the gospel. Put yourself in that moment just before Jesus' arrest in today's passage. Peter performs a radical ear-ectomy on the servant of the high priest. The guy is probably screaming and bleeding everywhere. Head wounds bleed like crazy. And in the midst of this chaotic scene of Jesus getting arrested, He stops and heals this man's ear. You probably would have had trouble processing what you just saw: "Wait, I thought...Wasn't his ear just cut off? Why does he have an ear again? I am really confused right now."

There is so much creative, sustaining power in that moment, that it should give us incredible courage with the gospel. We can confidently represent and proclaim Jesus because He made everything. He sustains everything. This is His planet, and He is in charge. Did you see what He just did? Seriously, He made an ear? His opinion is all that really matters in this moment.

Outreach becomes simply telling people about their Creator, their Sustainer, their King. Outreach becomes telling people the King of the universe is coming back to rule: "Listen to me, God made this world. We are all His creation. You need to get ready to meet your King." You are doing people a service. This gives us courage in outreach.
