Stars - Wednesday June 04, 2014
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8:3-4 NIV
I started reading Genesis again on January first, and I was reminded that on the fourth day of Creation God made the sun, moon, and stars.

There are approximately 3 x 1023 stars spaced out over countless galaxies in the observable universe. That means that every man, woman, and child on the face of the earth (about 7.2 billion people) could each own 43 trillion stars! If you were given the task of counting your personal assortment-at a rate of one per second-it would only take you 1.3 million years to take inventory!

That's why I laugh every time I read about God's creation of the sun, moon, and stars. As numerous as they are, Genesis 1:16 simply says, "He also made the stars." It's almost stated as an aside, as in "By the way, I also made the stars." It sounds so funny, like, "Honey, I made spaghetti for dinner tonight, oh, and by the way, I found the cure for cancer." Or, "I sold a hat at work today, oh, and I also won the lottery." God didn't just make our star; He made trillions of them, and they barely get mentioned.

I just think that's extremely comforting for our troubles. When you are overwhelmed, and there seems no way out, God says, "I can and will take care of you; oh, and by the way, I also made the stars." In other words, if God made trillions of stars with a mere word from His mouth, a layoff, a sickness, an ache, or a relational problem won't be any problem for Him to bring you through.
