Thus Saith Carl? - Wednesday July 01, 2015
And he said to me, "These are the true words of God." Revelation 19:9 ESV
How do we know the Bible is true? The first evidence is that the Bible claims to be the word of God. The Christian church did not invent this idea that the Bible is the word of God. I have read the entire Bible dozens of times. And it contains phrases like "God said," "Thus says the Lord," "Listen to my commands I gave through the prophets," and, "See to it that you do all I command you." There are approximately 3,800 times the Bible basically says God said this: "Thus saith the Lord."

This is an internal evidence. It doesn't externally prove the veracity of the Bible. But if the Bible were truly the word of God, you would expect it to say that over and over again. It doesn't say, "This is Bob's random thoughts he typed one morning at 4:00 am when he couldn't sleep." It says, "These are the very words of God." That is a pretty remarkable claim! This is what separates the Bible from that self-help book your uncle keeps telling you about, or that blog your girlfriend keeps posting articles from.

Since the Bible claims to be the word of God, how much more weight should we give it? I remember when I was engaged to my soon-to-be wife, I had a coworker bugging me that I hadn't slept with her yet. "How will you know if she is good in bed? You know, she won't want to do it, after you are married." I thought to myself, "God's Word has something to say about this, so I am going to ignore 'Thus saith Carl' on this one." How much weight do you give to voices other than the Bible?
