His Wings - Thursday July 02, 2015
Let me dwell in Your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of Your wings! Psalm 61:4 ESVLike an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions. Deuteronomy 32:11
The last day of February was beautiful in Kansas with a snowfall. Happening to have four grandsons over that day, I took them on a walk in our neighborhood. We stopped by the creek for them to try to crack ice with rocks and tree limbs (what else would boys do?), then disappeared down the mulch trail to check out a waterfall. To their great joy, the four brothers, ages three to eight, found a tangle of dead, snow-covered tree limbs fallen lengthwise, and immediately began walking along them.

A poem by Victor Hugo came to mind:

Be like the bird, who,

Halting in his flight

On a limb too slight,

Feels it give way beneath him,

Yet sings,

Knowing he has wings.

Dead branches did snap off under the feet of the intrepid climbers, but none fell. I thought how when we find ourselves "out on a limb" in life and suddenly the limb snaps-"You pushed me violently so that I was falling" (Psalm 118:13)-we humans don't have wings. Immediately another thought came rushing in: "But God does." Your wings catch us, Lord. You bear us up. So the psalmist finishes his thought from 118:13: "but the Lord helped me."
