Not Just Some Social Change Guy - Wednesday August 06, 2014
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. Colossians 1:15 ESV
Today's verse doesn't mean Jesus was the first thing born or created. Jesus is God, and it literally means that Jesus was "Begotten before all creation!"
From eternity past to eternity future, Jesus has always existed. He wasn't created; He eternally pre-existed. He is the image of the invisible God.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made" (John 1:1-3 ESV).
Who is the Word here? Jesus! He is God from the very beginning, and all things were made through Him. Nothing was made without Him. People will say, "I don't think the Bible actually says that Jesus is God." But it does! We see this in many verses.
Remember doubting Thomas, who wouldn't believe unless he saw Jesus and touched the holes in Jesus' hands? After Jesus shows up and gives Thomas the chance to do this, he bows down and worships: "'My Lord and my God!' Thomas exclaimed" (John 20:28). Thomas calls Him God!
Paul says to Titus , "Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ" (2:13 ESV). Can we believe that? We can and must believe that Jesus is God. He's not just some good teacher or social change guy. He is God in the flesh. The Bible says so.
