The Mirror - Sunday August 07, 2011
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12
I don't know why I haven't noticed this unusual reflection in the mirror before. We've lived in the same house nearly seven years. The same mirror has been over the same couch the whole time. But recently I looked in the mirror and for the first time noticed the reflection of our bird feeder. Stationed outside our kitchen's west window, its reflection bounces off the glass door of our east china cabinet onto a mirror on the west wall of the living room.

I could see the bird feeder reflected in the mirror-a double reflection. The image seemed perfectly clear, not dim. But when the above verse popped into my mind, I peered closely. I was surprised to see a bird on the feeder! I tried to identify the species, but no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't identify what kind of bird it was. I finally gave up and walked to the kitchen. Surprise! My "bird" was really a clothespin on our patio clothesline! It was lined up perfectly with the feeder, its "tail" hanging down. In the reflection it appeared to be a bird on the feeder. But my perception was not factual. It was simply my flawed interpretation of what I had seen in the mirror dimly.

This gave the verse new clarity. Our knowledge of truth is presently incomplete and sometimes even flawed. Right now we only see the Lord in a mirror dimly. We don't know Him fully like we will when He returns. The "bird" in the mirror humbled me and refreshed my perspective. We know very little now, so I accept that reality with humility. In eternity we'll see Him clearly. The best is yet to come!
