A Well-Dressed Woman - Sunday August 10, 2014
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3:12 NIV
I stood in front of my closet, thumbing through my "dress offerings." An upcoming wedding caused me to deliberate on every woman's age-old question: "What shall I wear?"

Now some women don't struggle with this question at all. They love shopping, the lure of clothes racks. Putting together outfits, knowing what looks right on them comes easily with pleasure. I, on the other hand, often ponder what looks good on me and prefer "getting in and getting out" of a store, preferably one store, with desired item in tow (hopefully on sale, presentable, and modest!)

As I faced my challenge, God reminded me that He cares about me and the clothes that I wear. He wants to help me in this area as much as any other of my life. Then He reminded me of another apparel item that is even more important than dresses or jeans: godly character.

Colossians 3:12 popped into mind: "Clothe yourselves with compassion . . . ." Wow! God was reminding me that dressing myself with "inward virtues" is just as important as fashion decisions. And virtues never go out of style.

Who doesn't like being around someone who is compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient? Honestly, you could be dressed in rags, but if these qualities were adorning the wearer, the external would fade into loveliness.

These thoughts in mind, I headed out on my shopping excursion, trusting that no matter what I found I would still be well-dressed for the day as His Spirit shone through.
