Whenever They Pick Up Stones... - Monday August 11, 2014
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" "I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." Mark 14:61-62 NIV
In today's verse the high priest asked Jesus, "Are you God?" Jesus answered, "I am"-a clear reference to Moses' encounter with God in the burning bush. Jesus is saying, "I am the guy who is going to judge the planet."
How did His accusers react? Did they "get" His references? Yes, they clearly connected the dots!
"The high priest tore his clothes. 'Why do we need any more witnesses?' he asked. 'You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?' They all condemned Him as worthy of death" (Mark 14:63-64 NIV).
The reaction of the High Priest is to charge Jesus with blasphemy! What is blasphemy? When a man who is not God says he is God. According to the Jewish law that deserved death.
"'I and the Father are one.' Again the Jews picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus said to them, 'I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?' 'We are not stoning you for any of these,' replied the Jews, 'but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God'" (John 10:30-33 NIV). "Let's kill Him." Why? Because He claimed to be God. There's no way around this. You can't take one part of Jesus without another. Whenever they pick up stones, it is because Jesus is claiming to be God! Why did the religious leaders tear their robes? Because He claimed to be God! And it's blasphemous to do that...unless you are God!
