Brutal Honesty - Tuesday August 11, 2015
As it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one." Romans 3:10-12 ESV
How do we know the Bible is true? The sixth evidence is that the Bible is brutally honest in its assessment of mankind. Think about how the Bible speaks of its own heroes. Abraham is a liar and polygamist. Moses is portrayed as a killer and a coward. David is presented as a murderer and adulterer. Job is presented as depressed. Samuel the great prophet, we are told, raised corrupt sons. Jonah is shown to be a coward who disobeyed God. Noah gets drunk. The twelve disciples abandoned and denied Jesus. Paul is a murderer. The people who wrote the vast majority of the Old and New Testaments spoke of their own flaws and weaknesses with brutal honesty. Read a few autobiographies-this is not the usual pattern.

Other religions do not teach a message of grace. All man-made religions teach you to clean yourself up, do the religious good works, and become sinless. But the Bible says you can't do anything to save yourself! Grace in Christianity is the free and unmerited favor of God as given for the salvation of sinners.

I find this sixth evidence for the Bible remarkable. When the Bible speaks of mankind, it calls us wicked sinners. When its human authors speak of themselves, they call themselves wicked sinners. And when it speaks of the way of salvation, it says we are wicked sinners who can't do anything to save ourselves-it is a work of God! That is a message unique to the Bible.
