Worship or Worms? - Tuesday August 12, 2014
The devil took Him to a very high mountain...and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'" Mathew 4:8-10
Only GOD is worthy of worship! He is the only uncreated being, the eternal one, the true God.
Angels would not accept worship. Many people fell face to the ground and wanted to worship angels when they saw them. Here's an example of how they did not accept worship: "And when I [John] had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!" (Revelation 22:8-9 NIV).
Peter did not accept worship when Cornelius attempted to worship him in Acts 10. Paul and Barnabas did not accept worship. They demanded that the people cease doing so in Lystra (Acts 14).
King Herod did accept worship. It didn't go well for him. He died! Here's what happened to a mere man who accepted worship: "They [a crowd of people] shouted, 'This is the voice of a god, not of a man.' Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died" (Acts 12:22-23 NIV).
Only God is supposed to receive worship. Yet, as we shall see tomorrow, Jesus clearly received worship (Matthew 14:32-33). In doing so, He claimed to be God.
