An Unflinching Belief - 2 - Wednesday August 19, 2015
An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:39-40 ESV
I find solace in the fact that Jesus speaks of some of the most unbelievable stories in the Old Testament as actual historical fact. Perhaps you've been asked, "Are you telling me a guy got swallowed by a fish?" In today's passage Jesus is linking Jonah's time in the great fish with His death and resurrection!

Or maybe you've heard this question: "Are you telling me God created Adam and Eve?" Mark 10:6 says, "But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female'" (ESV). So Adam and Eve were made; they weren't the product of evolutionary chance. Also, the word "made" in this verse, in the original Greek, implies an action at a point in time, not a progressive development.

Maybe someone has asked, "Are you telling me God flooded the earth?" We read this in Luke: "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. . . so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed" (Luke 17:26-27, 30 ESV). Again, Jesus is linking His kingdom with the flood of the world.

Jesus had unflinching belief in the inerrancy of Scripture down to the smallest stroke of the pen. Do we have similar confidence in the Bible? I do! Why? Because Jesus did!
