The Facts of Faith - Saturday August 29, 2009
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:1-3
We Christians are to live by faith. This does not mean blind faith or faith as a leap in the dark. It is not fact versus faith but faith in fact.

No one has seen God but the majority of people believe in God. Why is this? It's because there is evidence for Him all around us, from the microscopic world to the macroscopic world. C.S. Lewis said, "The world is crowded with God. We can ignore Him but we cannot evade Him." No one has seen the wind, radio waves, or gravity, yet we believe they exist because we see evidence for them. As a result, we put our faith or trust in these phenomena of nature and order our lives accordingly. In the same way, we are to put our trust or faith in God and live our life in a way that is pleasing to Him.

The second important fact about faith is that our faith is only as good as the object we put our faith in. For example, I might believe I can fly and jump off a building. No matter how sincere my belief, I would be sincerely wrong. I may believe that the ice is thick enough to walk on, but if not, I will end up all wet. However, even though my faith may be weak, I can step out on ice two feet thick and stand tall.

The point in this is 1) don't divorce faith from fact (evidence) and 2) the object of our faith is God who is able to make us stand. So stand firm in your faith.
