Lamb in Stream! - Sunday September 13, 2015
I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands. Psalm 119:176 NLT When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. Luke 15:5
On a lovely spring evening my husband John and I were grandchild-sitting. We took the three girls to our neighborhood stream. I made the mistake of letting our sweet little two-year-old in the stroller take a stuffed lamb along.

At the stream I patiently handed pebbles to Kiera in the stroller to throw into the water. Then I wandered away to join the older girls on the big boulders at the creek edge. At a shout from John I looked up-Kiera had thrown the lamb overboard! I grabbed at it as it went by on the rapid current but missed! Then Jane, Aisalyn, and I sprinted downstream to "head it off at the pass"! To our sorrow no lamb ever appeared. Bereft, we made our sad way home.

The next day I invited our daughter Anne out to the neighborhood for a "creek walk." Together Annie and I picked our way down the middle of the stream, keeping our eyes open. Before long Annie cried out and went straight for the lost lamb, hanging onto a branch, hidden behind white foam. We continued on our way happily, lamb tied to her walking stick by his blue bow.

This incident reminded me of a story of a canoe trip for international students in Nebraska years ago. One canoer overshot the landing spot and went much farther down the river. The hapless international student, however, was sure that Jim Wiebelhaus, the pastor, would eventually come out from town and find her. A few hours later in the darkness he did. And so does our Lord-rejoicing.
