Someone to Watch Over You - Wednesday September 23, 2015
The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord. Psalm 146:10 NIV
I noticed her as we were looking for a seat. The community gathering in my small hometown held many faces, a number familiar from long ago. As I sat down next to this tiny old lady, now in her nineties, I recognized her as my second grade teacher. Despite her dimmed eyes and loss of hearing, she recognized me as well, and we enjoyed a visit the best we could in the noisy room.

She wasn't the only "old one" there. My heart grieved as I observed other men and women tottering around who had once been strong, stalwart leaders of our community. Even my peers who had attended school with me were graying and at retirement age. How could this be?

I left this event feeling unsettled and sad. This was certainly a reality check! My generation and the one preceding mine were indeed fading like the fall grass. Those who once watched over me and led me as a child in my school and church were gone or close to it.

This was a fresh reminder of our enemy Satan's fateful strategy successfully launched in the Garden of Eden. He stirred up a rebellion in the hearts of mankind against their Creator that resulted in sin, aging, and dying, generation after generation.

How relieving also to remember that my Lord is an everlasting Lord, who faithfully watches over each generation; He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Though I and my generation will fade like the grass, mine is a temporary fate. For those who know Jesus Christ, Victor over the grave, we have a vibrant, deathless eternity before us!
