Walk in the Light - Friday October 31, 2014
This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 NLT
Today is October 31. Some children will dress in costume and go to neighbor's houses for candy. Some will avoid the holiday all together. Regardless of how you view the day, one thing is certain: today is the day the Lord has made, and it does not belong to Satan. Psalm 24:1 points out that everything belongs to the Lord. Therefore, there is no reason to let Satan have Halloween because it is not his day in the first place. So what are ways to embrace Halloween? Hallow is the same word for "holy" that we find in the Lord's Prayer, and even is a contraction of "evening." The word Halloween itself is a shortened form of "All Hallows Eve," the day before All Saints Day. This holiday can be a holy day to deepen our understanding of faith.
One way to observe the day is to honor and remember martyrs and saints who have dedicated their lives to serving God. Acts chapters 6-7 tells of Stephen, the first Christian martyr who was stoned because of his faith in Jesus Christ. I am challenged by how Stephen defended his faith by quoting so much of the Old Testament. We can follow his example on this day by taking time to study the Bible.
Another way to use this day for God's glory is to remind ourselves that there is no darkness or fear where the Spirit of the Lord is present. Psalm 27:1 (NIV) says, "The LORD is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid?"
Walk in the light today with the knowledge that we serve a victorious Savior. Happy All Saint's Day Eve!
