And He said, "My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest." Then he said to Him, "If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here." Exodus 33:14-15
My three-year-old grandson Josiah reminded me of Moses the other day. Early June was a time of many gatherings since Josiah's three cousins from Romania were visiting their cousins in Kansas City. Josiah was cautious, rightly so, because there was always the possibility of being trampled to death going down the basement steps to play in a cool place with toys from another generation.

"Mima, will you go with me to the basement?" Josiah asked sweetly.

"Sure," I answered.

"And will you stay with me down there?"

"Yes, Josiah."

"Will you come back upstairs with me?"

"Sure, Josiah."

"Then I won't worry."

Immediately I thought of Moses talking to God on Sinai. God is angered at His "obstinate people," who have sinned by worshipping a golden calf. He tells Moses to lead the people to Canaan, but says, "I will not go up in your midst" (Exodus 33:3). Moses appeals to God to change His mind because he can't bear to go without the God with whom he has been so intimate.

We have the same God as Moses did-Emmanuel, God with us. He was pleased to go with Moses, and He is pleased to respond to our God-desire to go with Him and know Him. So we can say with little Josiah, "Then I won't worry."
