Man in the Mirror - Thursday November 07, 2013
For if you listen to the word and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. James 1:23- 24 NLT
One of my favorite kick-back-and-relax activities is watching the show Celebrity Apprentice. I love seeing the teams brainstorm to creatively market a product or plan an event to raise money. But what really fascinates me is when the cameras go behind the scenes to the interactions between people who sometimes have very large egos. I often wonder if these celebrities are surprised or embarrassed when the show airs, and they see themselves unfiltered. Are they aware of pride and selfishness in their character, or are these areas huge blind spots?

I wonder the same thing about myself. Am I clueless to growth areas and flaws in my life? I thankfully don't have a camera on me broadcasting all of my shortcomings, but there are gentler ways I can get a broader perspective on my weaknesses. One is to invite close Christian friends to speak truth about areas they see that I need to grow in. I meet weekly with three women, and we are cultivating accountability with each other. Another is to let the Holy Spirit reveal things to me as I read the word of God. I have been reading through the New Testament recently, and I am often convicted by verses I encounter. I have seen areas where I am impatient and self-centered. But I don't want to be like the person in the verse above. I want to take an honest look in the mirror and keep that image in mind. May we live like the psalmist who invites truth to be spoken into his life: "Examine me, O Lord, and test me. Look closely into my heart and mind" (Psalm 26:2 GW).
