Re-routing - Friday November 28, 2014
For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and... fire in it by night... Exodus 40:38
Driving through the narrow, winding roads of rural Pennsylvania in the spring freshness was charming. John and I were traveling a completely unknown route, trying to find my brother's church, and had thought we would be fine with GPS to guide us. But strange things were happening. We would maybe miss a turn but find ourselves back on the route, having made a little curvy side trip a few roads over. John was sure that our route was overly circuitous. I wondered myself. I should mention I held his phone in my hand, giving directions as they came on the screen.

On our return route I noticed that the phone screen would say "rerouting" if we missed a road, before we could do our usual U-turn. That must have been happening repeatedly on our route out! The GPS had rerouted us so instantly that I hadn't noticed it. I began to think how the GPS was like the Holy Spirit: so gentle, so compassionate, not criticizing us, but immediately implementing a new way to keep us in God's path when we strayed off the original route. Our heart was right, but our knowledge was lacking: "For if the readiness is present, it is acceptable according to what a man has, not according to what he does not have" (2 Corinthians 8:12). The Lord understands our weaknesses and needs and has sent His Holy Spirit, much more intimate than a cloud or fire, to guide us "throughout all our journeys." Only He has the wisdom to instantly reroute us when we lose our way. I think He does it every day, even without our noticing.
