I am the Lord's servant. May everything you have said about me come true. Luke 1:38 NLT
These words that Mary spoke to Gabriel define for me what it means to live a life fully surrendered to God. She is essentially saying that she belongs to Him and that he can do whatever he wants with her. I am sure Mary faced a tremendous amount of hurt and shame and judgment as her unexpected pregnancy became visible to those around her. All she could do was to cling to a trust in her God who was in control.
It is much easier to say "Thy will be done" when things are going well and the path we are on makes sense. But God's plan for us sometimes comes in perplexing and painful packages. Our assurance lies in the truth that God is good; He is involved in our circumstances; He will give us grace to handle whatever comes our way.
So how does this practically apply to our lives today? In what ways can we surrender as servants to God's will? It may be to endure and hope as we wait for a job or a spouse or restored health. It may involve giving God more of our time or money. It could mean accepting a difficult circumstance. Whatever it is for us, may we have hearts that say "Yes" to God.
